Where is the story of your life?
22 August 2007Up in the rafters of my parents garage holds my childhood possessions. One in particular contains a shoebox full of notes from my friends in middle school. Next to this precious shoebox are old journals I used to keep. I only had one as a little girl that actually had a lock to help protect my written down thoughts. Slowly it went from cute photos and bright colors on the front to a simple spiral binder. I was just as protective if not more, of those journals the older I got. No one could read them, which of course only egged my brother on to try and find where I hide my journals (of course under my pillow, never know why he didn’t think to look there). In college my journals turned more into written prayers and Id carry this notebook with me to college group. It would sit on top my bible on a chair holding my spot as I chatted with friends. Anyone could of walked by and read my deepest thoughts. Somehow I think I believe the camouflage of a simple binder would keep people away instead of the obvious lock on the front.
I haven’t kept a hand written journal in years. I started writing a personal blog when I moved across the country for the first time to help my friends and family back home in touch with me. Sure it was on the internet, but why would anyone else other than my friends and family care what I had to say? Soon, my blog turned into more than just my daily coming and goings. Id write about all sorts of things becasue there was freedom to do so. As my blog has document most of my life over the past few years, they posts are not nearly as intimate as my journals once were. Sometimes I write for an audience, other times I do not. I remember coming across my brother’s blog and him getting quit upset with me that I was reading it. As if I went under his pillow and grabbed his journal. I kindly reminded him that it is after all called the world wide web; the whole world including his sister could read it.
Heres what I find interesting, how popular blogging as become. This trend of spilling our thoughts across the internet. Sure some of us are more careful with our thoughts online than others. How did it become so popular and why are we so willing? I appreciate it being easier to keep up with friends and families whether across town or the country. Although, sharing lives between a computer screen has taken away part of the intimacy from a face to face conversation. There’s been good and bad stories of people keeping personal blogs. This is a trend that you can make your own, so jump on the blogging train if you haven’t already. If you started one and forgotten about it, resurrect it. I highly recommend keeping some sort of record of your life, whether privately in a spiral bound notebook or a blog.
